Tans book is a narrative that derives from Tans life growing up as a Chinese-American.Jing-Mei June Woo is a thirty-six year old woman who has always considered herself to be American as she was born and raised in San Francisco, California.June finally travels to her motherland as a result of her recently deceased mothers desire to reconcile with her long lost daughters.By accepting her cultural identity, June has achieved happiness.
Happiness can be defined by feeling content with ones identity such as how June is content with being a Chinese American. With Tans use of diction, pauses between paragraphs, imagery, and organization; the novel neatly concludes with the connection of each short story to the theme of happiness. Throughout the passage, Tan exhibits her writing style by her use of diction. Tan selects specific words that are able to convey the emotions of the characters as she desires. An example of Tans wise choice of vocabulary is revealed in the second paragraph, My sisters looked at me proudly. By the use of diction, breaks-between-paragraphs technique, imagery, and organization; Amy Tan ties together the main ideas of each short story, bringing them all together to reveal the ultimate theme of. Her parents wanted her to have an American lifestyle and a Chinese character. As a child, Amy Tan struggled with accepting her Asian appearance and heritage. She remembers trying to belong and ashamed of being different. After winning an essay contest at the age of 8, she continued to follow her dream of becoming a writer. One can actually understand the internal conflict more clearly. She lets her true identity poke through when she says, I am in China, I remind myself. In this story, there really isnt anything disclosed to us which produces. As the author presents the main character to us, she is a thirty six year old Caucasian women, who does not accept herself as being Chinese. However, after her mothers death, Jing-mei realized the truth. Amy Tan in her short story emphasizes the changing of perspective views of Jing-meis life and pursuing the dream of her deceased mother.
